Soundview Cemetery Marrowstone Island

Establishment 

The Cemetery on Marrowstone Island has been in existence more than one and a

quarter centuries. Land was platted and set aside by early settlers in 1895 on the east side of Marrowstone Island for burials of deceased residents of the township of Nordland, WA.  First known burials began in 1899 and continue to this day. More land was donated to enlarge the Cemetery until a

total of 6 parcels of land were ultimately combined prior to 1985 to create the approximately 1.34-acre Sound View Cemetery of today.

• 1895 Platted land for cemetery established by Peter Nordby
• 1899 First Burials - Carl Norman 1899, Ole Nordby 1902, Alice Twiggs 1906, Mary Thompson 1907
• 1902 Additional land donated by Anna Nordby, Lincoln and Lela Nordby and Mariyn Fite
• 1916 Any resident of Marrowstone Island could acquire a plot by working to clear cemetery land
• 1958 -1985 Additional land donations by Anna, Lincoln, Lela and Roy Nordby, Marilyn Fite, Lloyd & Lois Chandler

Various committees were established by the Nordland community to develop and maintain the island, Including oversight and improvement of the Cemetery.

Cemetery Committee

• 1937 Cemetery Board established – Provides for “orderly cemetery operations and keeping up with State Codes”
• 1938 Sound View Cemetery name selected; Sign constructed by Mr. A. W. Michaelson
